An extraordinary Victorian 15ct gold bracelet with beautifully elaborate links, a British Registered Design mark and a wonderfully rich cabochon garnet heart padlock.
The bracelet is formed from substantial oval gold links, each embellished with spherical gold details and alternating decorative sleeves. Some feature intricate scrolling wirework and granulated-style borders, while others are adorned with beautifully crisp leaf and diamond-shaped motifs. The result is wonderfully sculptural, richly detailed and unmistakably Victorian.
One of the links bears a British Registered Design lozenge which we believe decodes to 17 September 1870. Although the date letter is slightly worn, it appears to be a “C” for 1870. Pieces bearing these early registration marks are particularly fascinating and collectable, offering a tangible record of Victorian design and innovation.
The bracelet is finished with a deep red cabochon garnet heart padlock, creating a bold and romantic focal point against the vibrant yellow gold. The heart tests as approximately 18ct gold and may be a later replacement, but sits beautifully with the bracelet and adds to its wonderfully individual character.
The bracelet itself is stamped for 15ct gold. Surface XRF readings are approximately 16–17ct across the main links, most likely due to a richer gold wash or gilding applied over the 15ct body to enhance its vibrant yellow colour. The terminal jump rings test slightly lower at approximately 12–13ct and appear to be later replacements.
In excellent antique condition overall, with the decorative detailing remaining beautifully crisp. One spherical gold detail is missing from one of the terminal links. The end loops appear to be later replacements, most likely fitted at the same time as the garnet heart padlock. There are a few small dings to the reverse of the bracelet, consistent with its considerable antique age and not noticeable when worn.
